Congratulations to the Winners!

Congratulations to the Winners!

Our very first bedroom design contest has just wrapped! It's been fantastic to get a glimpse inside of so many unique bedrooms and the mix of styles represented has been varied and wonderful; a real look at real life everyday retreats. Without further ado, it's time to announce and celebrate our winners. The two top rooms are both beautifully designed - the Apartment Therapy readers chose well...

Kiel's bedroom is very NYC-style: it's the corner of a small studio apartment. This little room has got plenty going for it, starting with a view from the 37th floor, allowing Kiel to "lay in bed and watch the boats go down the Hudson River or watch the storms roll in from the west".

The interior view is just as sweet. The gray, white and gold palette is restrained yet upbeat and the fabric patterns are skillfully combined. Wherever you look, there is something aesthetically pleasing, from the crisp zig zag headboard to the lovely bedding; the gallery wall to the quirky clock collection. (and let's not forget the adorable Rufus!) The overall design is taken to the next level by the calming yet sophisticated warm gray walls - a shade just deep enough to anchor all the elements and make the spots of white which Kiel uses throughout really shine. While this room may have to do quadruple duty during the day, there is no doubt that, come nighttime, it's truly a restful, restorative bedroom retreat.

Update: A quick message from Kiel - Thank you to everyone who voted for me in this contest. As a young professional in NYC trying to build their design business having this opportunity will surely help drive business my way. Myself and my dog Rufus (shown in every pic) were displaced from Hurricane Sandy for 2 months, this upswing in luck is greatly appreciated and welcomed in our life! I plan to give the cash portion of my prize to the Ronald McDonald House where I'm currently involved with a design project. Thank you for your votes, nice comments, and support! xo - Kiel & Ru

Melanie's beautiful bedroom in Montreal shows off the power of mixing old and new in your decor. The space itself is clean, crisp and industrial-chic, with light wood floors, large windows and soaring cement finish ceilings. The vintage furnishings are a perfect counterpoint to the streamlined room, providing texture and a patina of age, along with a scale that is perfect for a small studio space.

The repurposed china cabinet is a great example of Melanie's design smarts - it makes a unique style statement while providing space definition and lots of storage - baskets on top, jewelry and accessories within and a lineup of cute shoes below. The design takeaway from this winning entry that will work in any room? Texture! Melanie's masterful mix of the nubby bedspread, furry chair throw, decorative wood carving, woven baskets, mirror and colorful patterned rug really works to make the room rich and visually interesting.

Update: a message from Tiffany - Thank you so so so much to everyone who voted for my space and for your encouraging comments :) I've been following AT for years and was over the moon when my entry was accepted into the competition and never imagined to win! Thanks AT and AT followers for making this design dream come true!

Congratulations also go out to the other three finalists, Minetta, Sarah and Tiffany, for their successful run in the contest as well as their beautiful rooms. Huge thanks to everyone who participated, from all of you who took a chance by sending in an entry to each and every voter who helped us crown our winners. And finally, for a one-stop shop of bedroom inspiration at any time, remember to check out (and bookmark) the My Bedroom Retreat room archive, featuring all 178 published entries.
